Taste of Sailing

 

A ‘Taste of Sailing’ is aimed at beginners and is designed to be an inexpensive way to find out if sailing is your thing. The course is short and sweet and gives an immediate thrill with a great sense of satisfaction at the end, here’s what’s involved:

Objective
The aim of this brief course is to give you an introduction to the thrill and enjoyment of sailing.

Previous knowledge / experience
No prior experience or knowledge is required. Suitable for ages 8+

Types of Boat
This course may be completed in any type of sailing dinghy, small keel boat or catamaran. At Star Outdoors you’ll be using a sailing dinghy (Pico / Declic / Ludic). When your certificate is issued, it will show the type of boat you used.

Duration

From 10:30 am to 12:30pm

Assessment
Assessment is continuous throughout the course.

By the end of this course you will be able to do the following:

Clothing & equipment:
Describe why you should wear a Personal Flotation Device.

Sailing techniques & manoeuvres:
– Identify which direction the wind is blowing from.
– As both helm and as crew,
– Reach across the wind
– Stop the boat
– Turn the boat through the wind (Tack)
– Help balance the boat
– Raise and lower the dagger or centreboard and rudder

Capsize recovery:
Explain why it is important to stay with a capsized or inverted boat.

Personal Development:
Describe how to continue sailing and develop your sailing skills and knowledge.
