Sunday Morning Sailing is going well at Staroutdoors. A dedicated group of young sailors take to the water each Sunday 10am to 1pm.

Having come through sailing courses recently its great to see the enthusiasm continuing.

Any adults and parents out there now is the opportunity to get involved and help to steer the club along the way.

Staroutdoors management and staff will offer any help required to ensure this sport is available to children and adults alike.

Want to learn to sail or just improve your technique? Then come and join in on one of our sailing courses. We can teach you the basics of sailing or if you’ve done the beginners course why not go on to the next step and polish you’re skills so that you can go it alone. The dates for the courses are:

Expand Your Sailing Skills – 25th April (2 days)

Introduction to Sailing – 23rd May (2 days)

Improver Sailing Course – 13th June (2 days) and 27th June (2 days)

It was a challenging summer to say the least but whilst the weather might have been a bit of a washout, there was no dampening our spirits here at Star Outdoors. Despite the seemingly constant fall of rain we were still able to run a number of very successful events and our diary over the year looked something like this:

  • Summer Camps: we had a fantastic turn out across all our camps and it’s fair to say that a good time was had by all those that took part. Such was the success that we’ll be running them again next summer so keep an eye on the website for dates .
  • Courses: we have successfully put a number of people through their paces on a variety of sailing & kayaking courses, so watch out for extra traffic on the bay! The popularity of the courses has given us food for thought when planning next years itinerary so if you fancy yourself as a budding Ger Owens or Phil Lawton then let us know and we can contact you with details The dates for next year will be up on the website soon. Congratulations to all who had their log-books signed off over summer – well done!
  • Chernobyl Children’s Day: a fantastic day was had by all here at Star Outdoors particularly as most of it was spent out on the water. It was one day out of a very memorable stay and our regards are extended to Patricia Daly and all concerned in organising the occasion.
  • Kerry U14s Ladies Team: a trip to Star Outdoors was the order of the day for a team that mounted such a triumphant campaign and were worthy winners of the All Ireland Trophy. They were treated to a day of activities with some time spent on the now famous water trampoline and slide!
  • Kenmare Triathlon: it’s tiring just thinking of this event and we have much admiration for the competitors who took part in this gruelling race. A large crowd was here to support the 100+ entrants and it made for a great atmosphere down here at the Star Outdoors marina. Hopefully next year will prove just as popular and if this is your thing why not sign up for 2009?
  • Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2008: the ‘Star of Kenmare’ cruise boat was in service to provide transport for all the visiting dignitaries along the bay as part of the opening ceremony and was just one small part of a well oiled machine that saw the event run smoothly.
  • Coach Tours: the conditions in the world economy and the wet weather hasn’t prevented the coach tours from dropping by in large numbers. Visitors have been treated to a trip along the bay on board the ‘Star of Kenmare’ cruise boat followed by a fabulous dinner in Con’s Bar and as ever the whole occasion has lived up to and even exceeded expectation.
  • Doughnut Rides: new for 2008! We’ve seen the popularity of this activity soar this year so if you think you have the nerve, book a session and have a go – just remember to hold on tight!
  • School Visits: the budget hasn’t helped schools who are trying to plan their activities for the year, but thankfully we’ve still had several make the trip here to Star Outdoors for a whole range of activities; with loads more still to come. In September we had our biggest ever school group (100+) here for the ‘Outdoor Survival Experience’ and boy were they put through their paces by our instructors! The students did brilliantly and even though they had to battle against the elements, their enthusiasm remained high and they went home with a real sense of pride and achievement. If you’re a teacher or a student who wants to get involved in the outdoors, whether for the day or longer, contact us and we can get you going.

Our friendly and helpful staff are on hand if you want to get in touch and ask about the wide range of activities available here at the Star Outdoors centre. Email or call and they’ll be delighted to help out..

Last words: we’re the activity centre the weather can’t spoil!
